What role does second stage
oxidation treatment play on Cree Flashlight? This article will share you some tips. You
may know something from the flashlight sellers. When you are choosing
flashlights, the seller may tell you the shell has been treated with the
second-stage oxidation process which make the shell not easy to get scratched
and become harder that that has not been treated. Well, this has stated the
main benefit of the second-stage oxidation, but did not tell you why the
flashlight shell needs it. "Oxidation process" is a surface treatment
way in the aluminum industry. Since both aluminum and its alloys are active in
terms of chemical properties, which determines they are easy to get rusty. The
second-stage oxidation is to make them not easy to get rusty, and another
important benefit is, oxidation can bring an exquisite appearance to the
surface.
Strictly speaking, the
"oxidation" has little to do with the solidity but can make the
surface not easy to get scratched. What determines the hardness is the material
itself, for example, aluminum or alloys, what kind of aluminum, etc. The pure
aluminum is of very low hardness. Then heat treatment of aluminum is called
'Aging' inline. It heats the aluminum to 380-500 degrees Celsius, keep the
stage a while and then let it cool naturally so to increase the hardness. The
so-called hard oxygen oxidation process is kind of surface treatment
technology, of course, it can only improve the abrasion hardness rigidity but
not increase solidity. If a piece of aluminum is not treated, its surface will
generate a piece of oxide film, thin, colorless and not abrasion resistant.
Common oxidation process is
to electrify the electronic cell to generate an oxide layer which is under
control, the thickness can be controlled by the current density and time, there
are a lot of benefits than the natural oxide layer, wear-resistant,
non-conductive. You can dye (generally black or any color) hard oxygen
processing, technology and general principle similar oxygen, but a low
temperature and low current density, long time, special electrolyte it can get
denser and thicker oxide layer with higher hardness. The problem is, there is
no distinct line between general oxidation and hard oxidation, so the US
military developed a standard HAII, the third-stage hard oxidation, but many
manufacturers do not strictly in accordance with the standards of production.
No matter what oxidation process the flashlight adopts, the goal is to protect
the shell not easy to be scratched or get rusty and gain a beautiful
appearance.
